Secure USB Drives
Lok-It Secure USB
The Information Security Office provides secure USB thumb drives available to Health Science Center employees at no cost.
The 4 GB devices use on-drive hardware encryption that meets federal requirements for encryption strength, therefore meeting HIPAA requirements for protecting data in motion. The full-time (always on) encryption ensure that if the thumb drive is lost or stolen, the information on it is protected and cannot be recovered without the required personal identification number (PIN) set up by the device user. Any attempt to guess the PIN results in the device being wiped and the information being lost when the wrong PIN in attempted 10 times in a row. Additionally, since the encryption is hardware-based, it can be used on any operating system that can accept a USB device - Window, Mac and Linux.
These devices should be used any time you are moving sensitive information from its primary location to another. As we say with all USB devices, the secure USB drive should not be used as the only copy of your sensitive information; the best primary storage location is always a server with a good backup process.
